Natural Language Processing, more specifically sentiment analysis allows us to understand the “sentiment” or positivity/negativity of a text towards different entities. Allowing us to understand their biases towards various characters. This data is a powerful tool. It can allow us to create a better understanding of Economical, political, and social trends around us.

Aletheia makes use of sentiment analysis to understand the viewpoints of various news articles. This is done through Google’s NLP API. By running the article through a pre-trained NLP model we can recognize the entities in the article (whether it be organizations, people, objects, or locations). Then through techniques such as word embedding, we can understand the tone surrounding said entities. This process allows us to see if whether the article views the entity through a positive or negative light.

Aletheia then provides this information to its users. Making them aware of the various viewpoints surrounding the topic, allowing them to recognize the biases of an article, and encouraging critical thinking about these various views. Making users aware of the various viewpoints and biases in the topic is key contextualizing news articles. It will also allow users to recognize extreme perspectives and biases. This is not only a step towards depolarizing the political atmosphere but also gives users a more comprehensive view of the world around them.

What inspired you (or your team)?

We live in a very polarized world. Everybody has specialized feeds that reflect their own beliefs and perspectives. People get stuck in echo-chambers, continuously reaffirming their beliefs with like-minded people. Because of this people no longer understand, sympathize, or even respect each other’s perspectives. This is the cause of political polarization in the US. This is why I got interested in sentiment analysis and NLP. I truly believe this technology can raise awareness of the biases in various texts, and alternative viewpoints on the topic. I believe this process will promote critical thinking among readers and increase sympathy and understanding for other viewpoints.
